Week 10: Last Weekly Feedback

It’s been a short long time… Let’s reflect about this week and think about the future.

As I told you last week, I’ve been to a Non-Fomal Education Festival last weekend. Besides our Golden Age University’s victory in the competition there, it was a nice opportunity to meet educators from formal and non-formal spheres.

For example, I met a university English teacher for programmers from the oldest Bealarusian town of Polatsk, who was asking me about the latest web tools for her PhD thesis (and thanks to the course and my light coding experience, I could tell a lot!). It’s an interesting and sad issue though, how education in Belarus doesn’t quite catch up with the technologies.

Well, they’ve realized now that we do need programmers (Belarus is one of the biggest outsource IT industies now), and they train them both in the universities and at some courses in IT companies, but the English teachers for such students are usually not tech at all, so it’s a real trouble for them to decide to teach and how.

As a result, I’ve met many interesting programmers at the Hackathon, who were teaching me some coding basics while I agreed to work with their English pronounciation. Others were asking about instruments to enreach their vocabulary as they study at Coursera or Novoed.

These guys really NEED and WANT to learn English.

Their teachers also NEED and WANT to teach them English.

We just need to combine their needs and desire. By asking everyone, by crowsoarsing the curriculum, by being technological at least with the tech guys.

I think it’s a good idea for the last week of our Web Tools course.

And I hope that technologies will very soon become a part of English teaching process not only with programmers and not only in Belarus, but with every student worldwide.

I believe that’s a great free and open tool which can change the communities for the better. And courses likes ours help the teachers to be the guides to the future of education and innovation.
